…on to boosting morale, perhaps — but over the course of multiple reads per day, it becomes tedious. Moreover, the automatic nature of the gesture defeats its purpose.

I respectfully disagree. 50 is my norm. It acknowledges the effort it took for a writer to create and post a story. I don't use it to "rate" stories.
