Don't quote me on this but I believe the figure it set somewhere near the Portuguese minimum wage. People do live on that kind of money but it's a pretty basic existence. That said, I do know of an American expat who was able to get a studio apartment on a rural property near where I live for 385 Euros a month. According to my family's report it's a cool place, just slightly isolated.
