A New New Year’s Resolution

I now read other people’s stuff every day. I started this habit weeks ago. Prior to that I’d read spottily.

It has been illuminating to say the least. Great writers. New ideas. Lots of laughs. Political and other insights. Fresh ways of looking at the world around me. The list of benefits goes on and on.

But, because of my tendency to be a bit scattered I don’t generally commit to a singular focus, or to the writing of one author to the exclusion of all others. Rather, I go where the moment leads me. If I see a captivating…

Humorous delusions

Barack Obama knows too

Like everyone in this world, big and small, Michelle Obama is on Twitter. So, I tweeted her.

I did it because, after publishing my “Quitting” story here, a reader responded that the former First Lady had explored a similar theme in her book “Becoming.” That is, moving up and moving on requires one to break with the known and take a leap into the unknown in order to progress and grow as a person.

Truth be told, I’ve not read “Becoming.” So I don’t know if “quitting” is a subject explored in the work. I’m just taking my faithful reader…

Just three magical acts … and we’ll love you forever.

It’s simple: ghost us, don’t read and don’t read some more.

Don’t respond to communications … EVER!

Who doesn’t love it when perfectly reasonable and professional emails, say from writer to editor just to pick one example, get ignored … repeatedly.

Just typing the words, I get a warm and fuzzy “ghosty” feeling all over. Especially since you are the big wheel and I’m just a little nothing in the lit world you command and control. So please, go ahead and ignore me and others of my lowly caste. We love it.

Seriously though I don’t give a good goddamn if you edited all of Billy…

Wondering about wandering, and vice versa

This story has nothing to do with “boxed water” but I love the photo. It brings back memories of living in Amsterdam, NL. Photo by Boxed Water Is Better on Unsplash

There’s nowhere I HAVE to be until July 12th, 2021 at 9AM.

So I’m about to wander.

I’ve enjoyed a lifetime of wandering about. Seventeen different grade schools. Extended travels — and a long stint living — abroad. Different cities, states, continents, jobs, friends and acquaintances. I’ve enjoyed them all.

Everyplace I’ve been has felt like home. Even the ordinary or marginally sketchy places.

Exactly why that is … beyond the scope of this short entry. But it does center on purpose or choice or decision to be: happy, engaged, satisfied, challenged in a positive way by a new environment…

Three new words you can use in the game “Urbane Dick Pic-tionary”

Now there’s a word or two for ya! Photo by Omar Quazi on Unsplash

You’ll get the picture in a minute.

This is the general term for those who — all evidence to the contrary — steadfastly refuse to wear masks or to wear them properly.

The three key holes in maskholes’ heads, the dangerous ones which should be covered by masks, therefore remain uncovered.

Weirdly, the other key maskhole head hole, the one where knowledge gets in … permanently plugged.

They’re hard to define precisely but you’ll know them when you see them, or more exactly, when you hear them speak.

Floyd - Thank you as always for taking the time to read and respond. I truly appreciate your insights.

This all just happened in my San Luis Obispo (SLO) neighborhood grocery store, in the pharmacy line. I’ll not name the store because I don’t want to call it, or its employees, out, but I do wish to address you, my unmasked neighbor.

“Sir” I asked gently, from about an eight-foot distance, “Where’s your mask?”

He instantly whirled around to fully face me and, taking an aggressive step forward (while I reflexively stepped back), pointed and poked his right index finger at me and spat out “How ‘bout if you mind your own business and I’ll mind mine, huh?”

If you’re expecting a s%$t show, brace yourself.

I’ve always wondered where all the hate hid on this platform. It turns out it’s just one step away, on social media.

Once upon a time, I wrote a story …

about a COVID-related milestone I’d achieved, living long enough — in spite of many members of society’s best efforts — to receive the vaccine.

In the story I made some disparaging remarks like:

No thanks to you, you non-mask-wearing, non-social-distancing, non-thinking, anti-vaxxing idiot.

I’ve dodged your willful ignorance bullets …

You, you miserable dangerous fucks, can do as you will and I’ll definitely continue to dodge you.

Oh, and…
